New HRIC Publication: Chinese Biweekly Journal

On the 20th anniversary of HRIC's founding, we have created a new publication, the HRIC Chinese Biweekly Journal (中国人权双周刊). The HRIC Chinese Weekly Journal takes the place of Chinese weekly Hua Xia Bao and monthly Ren Yu Renquan. It can be accessed online at biweekly.hrichina.org.
Police Accused of Killing Detained Man: They Were Ordered to Use Violence

On July 1, the trial of four police officers for involvement in the death of Wan Jianguo (万建国), who died in August 2008 on his 35th day of detention, opened in Nanchang Intermediate People’s Court in Jiangxi Province. HRIC has learned that three of the defendants said during cross examination that their superior, Xia Xiangdong, the fourth defendant, gave an explicit order to them to use violence. One officer, Guo Songlin, cried on the stand and apologized to the Wan family and his own family for the suffering he brought them. More »
HRIC Strongly Condemns the Formal Arrest of Liu Xiaobo by Chinese Authorities

On June 23, 2009, the Beijing Public Security Bureau formally arrested Dr. Liu Xiaobo, a signer of Charter 08, on charges of "suspicion of incitement to subvert state power" (涉嫌煽动颠覆国家政权罪). That Chinese authorities would take such an extreme measure exactly 100 days prior to the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, along with the previously announced mandatory pre-installation of the "Green Dam" filtering software and the all-out attack on rights defense lawyers, sends a grave warning to the international community, signaling further deterioration of human rights conditions in China. Rights Defense Lawyer Li Subin Sues Beijing and Henan Judicial Authorities

HRIC has lesarned that on June 11, 2009, Chinese rights defense lawyer Li Subin (李苏滨) filed a complaint at Beijing Xicheng District People’s Court against the Beijing Judicial Bureau and Henan Judicial Department. Li alleges that the judicial authorities violated the law in their failure to carry out their official duty of transferring and accepting his lawyer’s file. Their failure, he says in his complaint, has rendered him unable to obtain a lawyer’s license from the Beijing Judicial Bureau for more than four years. More »
